The Power of a Smile

A smile is a simple gesture of the mouth in which the corners raise, someone appears to be happy. That happiness can come in various styles! It can come from hearing good news, overcoming a difficult obstacle, getting an encouraging not, finding a trustworthy friend, spending time with the people you love, being loved and understood, helping other, and so much more.

The value of a smile is not often appreciated or understood very well by some people. However, a simple smile can have a HUGE impact on someone’s day. Smiles can be contagious, and spread like a wildfire (but better than a fire because fires are not always good). If you just smile at one person it can make them smile which then help them share smiles with others and it will keep on spreading. It doesn’t have to be someone you know, but those are some of the easiest smiles to share because you have already built a relationship with those people. That doesn’t mean don’t try to share a smile with a random stranger because those can be some of the most rewarding experiences. You never know what others are going through, and you may be the only smiling face they see today. This is similar to the common phrase saying “You may be the only Jesus someone sees today”.

Every day is not a great day, and a simple gesture like a smile can make a bad day turn into a good day. I’m sure I am not the only one who has days were the day drags by, the smallest things make you angry or upset, and you lack the motivation to do anything. That is me some Wednesdays because they are my busiest days! I have class from 10am-6pm with a single 1 hour break. One recent Wednesday morning I spilled my drink at breakfast; then my 50 minute organic chemistry class felt like 3 hours. All my other classes seemed to drag by as well. While I was walking to one of my classes in the middle of the day I passed by my friend who gave a smile and said hello. This was the little bit of happiness and motivation I needed to get me through the rest of my long day. After my last class I was able to go eat with my friend like we always do on Wednesday, and this was what really changed my day/night. Just seeing her walk down the hall to meet up with me made me smile. Then when we started talking she asked me to tell her about something that made me happy, and I really struggled to come up with an answer. We then got deep into conversation about everything that happened during the day which spiraled into other random conversation. By the end of dinner we were both smiling and laughing! We ate Panda Express in the UC, so we each got a fortune cookie at the end. When she opened hers she immediately smiled and then turned it around so I could see it. The fortune read “your smile lights us a room” and it couldn’t be truer! My whole day was changed from the laughs and smiles we shared together!

Smiles can also be a form of love, and God has called us to love him with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself through the first and second commandments. A smile can be an easy was to share the love you are called to share! I don’t always know the words to say when a friend needs love and support but I do know how to smile and be there to listen, which is sometimes all they need. There are many different types of smiles and everyone has their own unique one! Some smiles are small, others are big, some show teeth, are some turn into laughter, which is an even greater form of happiness. The next time you are walking around campus, at the park, shopping, etc. I challenge you to put your phone down, look up, and share a smile to the people around you! Don’t get me wrong…sometimes this may be really awkward because they might not smile back, but it can also be really rewarding. When I smile it always has a way of making my day better! It goes along with the phrase Fake it till you make it, eventually smiling will help you become happy…at least it does for me! Mother Teresa once said, “Let us meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love,” so wear your smile loud and proud, sharing love & happiness everywhere you go! :)
