The semester had a slow start because of Hurricane Havey hitting near Rockport. Many students had already moved in and had to go back home, some were on the way here when the evacuation was issued, and others were still at home ready to come. The damage from the storm was devastating and has effected so MANY people along the Texas coast, including several students who go to TAMUCC and the Newman Center. It has been almost been 4 weeks since the hurricane hit, but there are still so many people still in need. This past weekend a group of students from the Newman Center drove to Catholic Charities to help them sort supplies that have been delivered from many states who wanted to send help. Looking at all the stuff that needed to be sorted was overwhelming at first, but once we got started it was really fun and a really great experience. We became really good at stacking water bottles, making assembly lines, and throwing cans of food to each other to sort into the different boxes. We shared many laughs, used a lot of teamwork and became great friends with each other while volunteering! While there Deacon Julio informed us that they are most in need of cleaning supplies, and they have PLENTY of clothing, water, and diapers.
This year we have also had the annual Islander Catholic kickoff where we played many games, had delicious hamburgers and hot dogs, and ended the night with some praise and worship. On Tuesday’s we have had study night, scripture study, and late night adoration with music from the AMAZING Domingo and Esteban! Women’s group and Men’s group have also started and many students have come together to deepen their faith, and join a community of amazing students. Keep coming to all of the events, and follow us on social media!
