In Memory of Deacon Alfonso

Deacon Alfonso Luis Ramirez passed away on November 2, 2014. Deacon Ramirez spent more than 30 years serving the youth and young adults in the Corpus Christi Diocese. He spent his last several months with us in Islander Catholic and at the Newman Center, transforming students' lives and beginning the process of reinvigorating the Newman Center and the Catholic community at TAMUCC.

So many were touched by Deacon's bigger-than-life personality, unconditional love, and unprecedented work ethic. His memory remains in our hearts and minds, and we hope that he will continue to guide and watch over us as we spread the love of God across campus.

Blessed John Newman

Why do we call it a Newman Center? The answer is in Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman. Bl. Newman "stands as a giant in the fields of theology, philosophy, and education. Influencing many academic and spiritual disciplines, Newman's writings and his lifelong search for religious truth continue to inspire scholars throughout the world." (Source

He was actively involved in the college setting, and sought to spread Catholicism and the love of God in healthier ways. As we pursue his vision in our own little way, we hope and pray that our words and actions will be fruitful and brings others closer to Christ and His Church.
